# Chart of accounts

*The list of accounts your entries post to, and how each account's type decides where it appears in reports.*

AXO includes chart of accounts templates for common types of business. Start from one, or bring your existing chart across when you migrate.

Every account has a type — asset, liability, equity, income or expense — and a more specific sub-type. Reports use the type and sub-type to place each account, so a chart brought from another system, with its own account codes, still produces correct statements.

> **Note:** When you add an account, choose its sub-type carefully. It decides where the account appears on the balance sheet and the profit and loss.
