# Opening balances

*Load your balances as at the cut-over date, and confirm they balance before posting.*

Opening balances set where each account stands on the day you start using AXO. They come from a trial balance exported from your old system as at your cut-over date.

1. Export a trial balance as at your cut-over date.
2. Import it in the **Migration Centre**.
3. Read the opening trial balance in the preview: total debits, total credits and the difference.
4. If the difference isn't zero, fix the file. AXO won't post opening balances that don't balance.
5. Confirm. The balances arrive as a draft batch.
6. Post the batch when you're satisfied.

> **Important:** AXO checks the difference to the last decimal place. A tiny difference that rounding would hide is shown, not ignored.

> **Note:** Cutting over at the end of your financial year keeps things simplest, because your income and expense accounts start the new year from zero.
