# Pay bills

*Prepare a payment for one bill or several, then have a second person release it.*

1. Go to **Purchases › Bills** and select the bills you're paying.
2. Choose **Pay**, then the bank account and payment date.
3. Submit. This prepares the payment — nothing is released yet.
4. An approver releases the payment from their Inbox, and it posts to the ledger.

Approval is based on the cash actually leaving your account, so a part-payment is judged on what's being paid, not on the bill total.

Payment runs follow the same rule: preparing a run and releasing it are separate permissions.

> **Important:** AXO records payments — it doesn't send money from your bank. After releasing a payment, make the transfer in your online banking as usual. The bank line will then match in reconciliation.
